Kizhi Island

Yesterday we visited Kizhi, one of more than 1000 islands in Lake Onega, and the site of the wonderful Church of the Transfiguration, made entirely of wood (no nails!) and the oldest wooden church in Russia.

For me, one of the most interesting things was in a house set up as it would have been in the 17th century.

it was a small 2-shaft counterbalance loom, with a reed made of real reed, string heddles, and a warp beam much higher than the breast beam.

Kizhi is on every Volga river cruise itinerary, as you can see in the shot of the boats stacked up at the Kizhi pier.
