Suddenly, almost overnight, the Fall colors have appeared. It only takes a few frosty hours to persuade the trees it's time.
This stretch of the river (the middle Rhine) has a series of castles, in various states of livability, perched on the top of the hills on both sides. Whenever we see a castle on top and a large tower at water's edge below it, we know that the castle's lord had the right to collect tolls from every passing ship. Lots of money in that occupation...
